A handy walkthrough for Plants vs. Zombies

In a time-management-meets-tower-defense game of skill, speed, and cunning, Pop Cap has introduced the game that pits; you guessed it, plants against zombies in a quest for survival. Players take on the role of a home-owner faced with a giant zombie problem. With a few seeds, some sun, and an incredibly fertile top soil, gamers will build an army of flora to protect their precious brains from becoming a zombie's snack! Luckily, the neighbor, Crazy Dave, has some intriguing items up his sleeve for you to buy.

The game itself comes equipped with a humorously penned "Suburban Almanac," which can be found in the main menu. It gives you a full run down of all the plants and zombies, as well as statistics on speed, damage, recharge, cost, or skills.

Adventure mode takes players through five different worlds that each take up ten levels for a total of 50 levels of frantic game play plus one showdown with the head zombie, Dr. Zomboss!. There are five main worlds - daytime, nighttime, fog, pool, and roof.

So without further a do lets take you through a our plants vs zombies walkthrough and level guide.

Plants vs. Zombies Levels

Day-time (World 1)

This world is an Ideal tutorial to acclimate gamers to the game itself. Pea Shooters and Sun Flowers will be the most useful and cost-effective plants for you to buy. In the daytime levels players will have sunshine available to them.

Tips: Learn the basics of the game play in this world. Get used to the speed of plants vs. the speed of the zombies, and utilize Wall Nuts in your arsenal.

Night-time (World 2)

In this world there is no free sunshine; therefore, Sun Shrooms will be the only sun power producers. Puff Shrooms, which are a free plant, are good to utilize because they are free and kill zombies well. Watch out for the zombies that come out of graves in this world.

Tips: Maintain a respectable amount of Sun Shrooms, and purchase these sun producing plants early on in each level in order to have enough money for defensive plants later on in the level. Keep an eye on graves that have just been vacated because plants, sun power, and gems sometime appear from them.

Pool (World 3)

There are two pool lanes that must be defended. Pool mode introduces a few strictly aquatic plants and zombies.

Tips: Build Tall Nuts or Wall Nuts on Lily Pads; build a few defenses in the pool to account for jumping or snorkeling zombies. Stock up on Pool Cleaner, it is the last line of defense before the house, and maybe highly effective to stop zombies that you cannot reach with any other plant.

Fog (World 4)

In this world these levels have lower visibility. Since players cannot see what is coming to attack them, they must build a strong arsenal that can take on anything.

Tips: Prepare for fog levels as you would for the pool or night levels. Build up a strong defense with a lot of Cat Tails. Use Torchwood to make the peas more effective in killing. Also, make sure you purchase Farm Rakes from Crazy Dave.

Roof (World 5)

On the roof, there is the added trouble of a slant which makes a few plants in your arsenal useless. Bungee zombies are especially tricky on this level.

Tips: Pea Shooters and Repeaters do not work well on roofs, instead, plant Kernalpults and Cabbagepults. Make sure you also plant Umbrella Leaf plants in each row; these will protect all the surrounding plants from airborne offenders.

Dr. Zomboss (Final Stage)

In this showdown, Dr. Zomboss must be defeated to end the game. Dr. Zomboss is extremely tough to beat, so you need to make sure your reaction times are on the ball.

Tips: Always keep a Jalapeno and an Ice Shroom handy. They are the best defense that you can have in this level. Use all other plants to fight off the other zombies around the Dr, and make sure you save the Jalapeno and Ice Shroom for the Doctor himself.

If you would like to try the game you can Download Plants vs. Zombies as a free demo version or order the full version through our website.

There is also a Survival Mode, where your goal is to survive five wars. Each one is signaled by the Flag zombie, who leads each hungry mob in their attack. Players can change their plants at each level in anticipation of the increasingly difficult attacks. The ultimate goal in the Survival Mode is to win the final battle and save your brains from being eaten. Each level in survival mode is longer and tougher than the levels in Adventure mode.

Each level is set on either five or six lanes of land that must be defended by the plants. Your last line of defense is the lawnmower. If a zombie gets all the way past your plants, then the lawnmower can take them out, but it will not regenerate until the level is over. Additionally, when it is a pool level, the last line of defense is a pool cleaner and in roof levels, it is roof cleaner.

Zombies enter on the right of the screen and make their way to the left, where the house will be situated. Plants are placed on the six lanes as a defending team of guns, bombs, and mines. Zombies can eat the offending plants when they are in their direct path, so the goal is to kill them before they get to your plants, this way you will not have to regenerate your plants all the time.

As the game goes on, more plant types will be unlocked and then become available for you to purchase. Variety in plants allows players to have a better constructed defensive against the zombies. Try the plants out for yourself by downloading a plants vs zombies demo.

Sun power is key in order to plant foliage. Sun power must be collected in the form of little balls of light that fall from the Sun Flowers. For this to happen you will first need to plant sun flowers, most wisely along the back row, in large quantities so they can produce enough power to get the plants you will need. You have two options when it comes to choosing your plants, quantity or quality. You should always opt for quality where possible.

After sun power, the most crucial feature is timing. Most plants have a regeneration time, as they need to get more sunlight to generate more energy for an attack.

Zombies, that come with additional defenses, such as helmets, cones and screen doors, take longer to kill and must be attacked with effective timing. In addition to killing time, regeneration time is also vital. While a plant may take 3 patches to kill, it may take 6 patches to regenerate and become useful again.

After level 5.4, a new feature of game play enters the mix. Trying your hand at gardening will earn money. Marigolds are available to purchase from Crazy Dave, and they spit out coins. While the initial price is steep ($3000), the payoff is much higher later on, and this comes in the form of coins from the flowers. When the Marigold begins to shimmer, it can be sold back to Crazy Dave for the same $3000 that was spent on it, therefore, making this plant a must buy.

You will also have a Zen Garden where you can cultivate mushrooms and water plants away from the game itself to earn additional money. The Tree of Wisdom has the biggest payoff out of all of the plants. When purchased, it can be planted to become a smart sidekick, giving you effective tips and tricks to beat the zombies.

In our plants vs. zombies walkthrough we will now move on to the mini games which offer an additional angle of entertainment throughout the game.

The Mini-Games

Beghouled:

A take on the well loved bejeweled game. Players must make matches to earn sun power, which is like money in Plants vs. Zombies; so essentially, you will play Beghouled to be able to earn upgrades for your plants.

Beghouled Twist:

Like in Bejeweled Twist, players must twist the puzzle to make lines of three in a row. The goal in this game is to make 75 matches.

Big Trouble:

Random plants are supplied via a conveyor belt and tiny zombies run rampant, however, the only plants that will be provided are Pea Shooters, Wall Nuts, Cherry Bombs, and Lily Pads.

Bobsled Bonanza:

The only zombies you will fight are Zomboni and the Zombie Bobsled Team. The Spike Weed is useful to pop the Zomboni's tires, therefore, making them unable to call out his sledders.

Column like You See Em:

In this roof game, every plant that is planted is placed on a pre selected row of five columns. Tall Nuts should always be placed in the front row for the most effective defense, and catapulting plants should be placed at the rear.

Dr. Zomboss's Revenge:

This is an exact replay of the final level in Adventure mode, only harder. Players must remember to fight fire with ice and ice with fire in order to counter attack this strong opponent, this is essentially the hardest possible thing you can do on Plants Vs Zombies.

Invisighoul:

This game is similar to fog, in that you will not know from where or who will be attacking, so therefore, it is always best to build a strong defense.

Last Stand:

This game gives you 5000 sun power points to spend on defense and only 250 between levels. The goal is to keep your defense strong enough to withstand five pool level zombie attacks. Tall Nuts, Torchwood, Cat Tails, Pea Shooters, and Garlic are the necessary elements to a strong defense.

Pogo Party:

All the zombies have pogo sticks! Players will need to utilize the Tall Nut, Magnet Shrooms, and catapulting plants to defend their house from the hopping dead guys.

Portal Combat:

This game features a portal that bullets and zombies pass through and come out of the corresponding portal on the other end. Portals switch during the game, which adds difficulty, so, an even built and strong defense is the key.

Raining Seeds:

A mini-game that you will find in the Fog levels, this is similar to the Slot Machine mini game because the plants will be chosen for you at random, apart from this time they fall from the sky, and you simply put them where you feel they will be the most useful.

Seeing Stars:

In this straightforward mini game of our plants vs zombies walkthrough you must patch up star-shaped holes in the lawn with Star Fruit. Star Fruit is not cheap, so there will need to be plenty of Sun Flowers around to earn power.

Slot Machine:

A slot machine will choose your arsenal for the level. Players simply put whatever defense they are given in the best possible layout, to try and overcome the level.

Wall Nut Bowling & Wall Nut Bowling 2:

The "pins" are zombies. The key to successful bowling is to rack up combos or roll bombs and kill a group all in one shot. Wall Nut Bowling 2 is a harder version of the above game.

Whack-a-zombie:

Just like the carnival game, only with zombies and graves. Whack them with a hammer when they pop out of the earth. There will be the occasional sun power rewards, so be sure to pick those up!

Zombie nimble, zombie quick:

A standard level but much faster, so be prepared!

Zombiquarium:

A throw-back to Insaniquarium, players must feed Snorkeling zombies to earn sun power, which in turn can be spent on more zombies for your collection.

Zombotomy & Zombotomy 2:

This game allows the zombies to fight back with equal force. Zombies walk around with plants on their heads and gain the capabilities of plants, such as Pea Shooters. Zombotomy 2 is a harder variation of the above game.
