Battleships game was first published as a pen and pencil game before the First World War. It later went on to become a popular board game created by the Starex Novelty Company. The board game certainly gave Battleships a bit more of a kick to excite the average game playing joe.

This puzzle game is played on four square grids (10 x 10 squares for each grid) with 2 belonging to each player. One of the grids is where the player positions his battleships; the other grid is where the player records his battleship fire.

The game play involves each player arranging the positions of his ships on one board. Each ship can be positioned either horizontally or vertically. The battleships cannot overlap, they take up varying space on the board depending on the type of ship being deployed. Each player has the same number and type of ships.

The standard fleet of ships in the Battleships game is: 1 aircraft carrier, 1 battleship, 1 cruiser, 1 patrol boat, 1 submarine.

Battleships is played using a table divider to prevent the other player from seeing where their battleships are positioned.

A player shouts out which squares he has chosen to fire upon, the opposition then announces whether or not any of his battleships have taken a hit. The players exchange fire until one fleet of ships is totally destroyed and the game ends. The amount of turns you have at firing upon your enemy's sea territory is dependant upon how many ships you have a float. The amount of squares each battleship occupies is related to the amount of fire that ship can handle before being destroyed.

This battleship flash version records your shots for you so only use one board per player. The graphics and easy game play bring this game to life!

One of the more interesting points is the game featured in the Batman Forever movie created back in 1995, where the notorious criminals Two Face and the Riddler play a live game of battleships with Batman and Robin, the suspense of which is unbearable!
