Game Review

Governor of Poker is an enjoyable poker game set in a cheesy, Wild Western style. The creators of Governor of Poker wind up the proceedings by taking you back in time to the gun slinging era, and give you a chance to test your poker skills against other tycoons and ladies of leisure, among other 'typical' Wild West characters.

Gun totin' gamblers

The game allows you to choose your gender and a name for your hero. Your male hero looks a lot like Yosemite Sam. You control this character as he finds himself in a central Texan town of San Saba, where you go about displaying your poker expertise at a variety of venues. The graphics are in cartoon format and the scenes are depicted from the top, looking down.

As you walk around town you bump into other standard western characters. Some may offer you advice on poker, while others may tell you where there is a game. You head to that particular spot, which is either a saloon or some tycoon's house.

The only game in town

The game tables are set up in standard poker format. Up to eight players sit around the table and the croupier deals the cards and collects the chips at the end of each round. He calls a few actions of the players, whether they want to fold, raise or call, etc. While all the other players are AI computer opponents, you get to choose your specific options. The only game played is Texas Hold 'Em. If you're new to the game, it may be a good idea to pick up some information on the rules of poker here before you proceed.

Basically you throw your ante into the beginning pot, and this is a set amount based on the level of the game. The croupier then deals two cards to each player. You only see the two cards you are dealt but not the ones held by others. Based on these two cards, you are asked to call, raise or fold. After the initial round, the dealer will show three community cards on the table. This action is called the flop.

The cards open on the table technically belong to every player, as they can see if they have a good enough hand with the two already with them. This leads into the next round of betting after which one more community card is dealt, called the turn. After the next round of betting the final community card is laid on the table. Now every player knows the strength of his hand by 'choosing' three of the community cards and joining them with their own. The player who has the best hand wins the pot, which consists of all the chips thrown in for this round.

You also have the option of going all in at certain points of the game, if you are dead sure that you have the best hand on the table. However, the downside is that if you lose this hand, you're walking out with nothing but the shirt on your back. Or sometimes, not even that.

Sizing up your competition

Poker is a game that depends a lot on studying human emotions and psychology. It's important to observe the actions or facial expressions of your opponents. However, in the Governor of Poker Download just like the second one, you only get to see the top angle view of the proceedings. You're only looking at the large western hats and fanciful bonnets of these players and not their faces. This takes away any edge you might have of observing their expressions. However, the game makes it up by showing their hand gestures and actions, such as fingers nervously tapping the table or steam coming out from the ears of certain players when the going gets tough. You also see the title of "Big Stack Bully" against a player who is playing hard and fast. You can use these cues to plan your own moves.

The game has a lot of variety in scenarios and opponents. The game comes in two modes. If you just want to enjoy the poker games, then you can choose the Instant Poker option. If you want to add some storytelling to the overall game, then it offers you the opportunity to build your real estate business with your poker winnings, in the full-fledged option.

The aim of the game is to win enough moolah at the poker tables to become the wealthiest dude in town and go on a buying spree. The properties you can buy around town are listed as San Antonio, El Dorado and so on. Hovering you mouse on them reveals their price as well as their earning potential. You can make a tidy income to combine with your poker winnings. You can also buy other things like wagons and carriages to travel to other nearby towns. You may end up buying a string of properties and become the Donald Trump of the 1880's.

The creators of the Governor of Poker Download have put a lot of effort into designing an interesting plot around a regular poker game format. The characters are unique and entertaining, and the real estate angle is quite refreshing. The game is produced in an animated cartoon format with colourful scenarios and characters. The sound quality is appropriate. The voices of the players and other characters in the game are distinct and quirky to go with their behaviour. The scenery of the Wild West towns and its typical landmarks such as saloons, stables, etc. are well designed. The game does not offer a multiplayer option, which is a disappointment, as it's always fun to play a round with real people.

Verdict

Governor of Poker Download is an entertaining take on the traditional card game. The Wild West setting, along with the real estate option, is fresh and exciting to play. The lack of a multi-player option and only being shown the top angle view of poker games are drawbacks of this well-conceived game. The graphics and production values are adequate. Overall, it's a fun game to play and an excellent introduction to poker.
