Pop cap games are back with their ‘greatest’ defense game, Plants vs. Zombies. The game is understated in its approach but as you will soon find out that it brings much more to the table. The game involves you setting up a defense, based on plants, to stop zombies from intruding, sounds normal!

Plants vs Zombies was released in 2009 and it instantly gained an exceptional response from players and critics alike. In fact, Plants vs Zombies had been nominated for a bunch of gaming awards. Not only did the game get noticed for its terrific game play, but strangely enough the music did just as well, as the game also won awards for best background music. Plants vs Zombies revolves around many types of plants and fungi such as; potato mines, cattails, peashooters and many more. Each plant has the capability of safeguarding or attacking the group of zombies against influencing and mesmerizing the residence. There are many horizontal tracks that you can be attacked from and usually, the zombie will move along one track; however, there are some exceptions, when a zombie will jump from one track to the next, making some attacks unpredictable. If you struggle to take out the zombies with your plants alone, then you can use those regular household tools such as a lawn mower or pool cleaner to devour your enemies, however, be warned once you use these items you cannot use them again until the next level.

Similar to other defense games in this genre, you can purchase upgrades at the end of every level; this is so your defense weapons can be utilized to newer levels such as the rooftop or a swimming pool.

You will soon find that certain plants do more damage to different types of zombies, and this allows players to learn as they go along, on the later levels it is essential that you know which plants do the greater damages. There are many different plants you can choose to grow, for example, the mushroom will be mostly ineffective in the day as it is nocturnal, but at night time it is one of the better plants to have to destroy zombies. So it is essential you have a balance.

You will be warned of this, as a warning will flash on the screen; but when this happens you need to make sure your defense is at its highest, otherwise the zombies will easily destroy your residence.

Unlike some other survival games, there are two additional modes apart from the original story mode; these are survival mode and the puzzle mode. Though some mini games and the additional puzzle modes have the tendency to distract the player from the main game, they have to beat them in order to complete the game. While the adventure mode occupies the majority of your entertainment and time, the other modes are just as fun as the original.

Another difference between this game and other defense games is the Zen garden; here players look after plants which represent fallen zombies. This is an additional way to make an extra buck for the normal mode, as long as you care and nurture these plants.

As well as the exceptional game play, Plants vs Zombies concentrated on other sections, such as the music, which was composed by Laura Shigihara. She used a combination of big band and swing beats to make the music. It was only after the composer had played the games several times that she decided to write the music, and I believe that because of this additional attention to detail, the music plays a much bigger part in the game then others in this genre.

The additional attention to detail, such as the music, shows us that developers have not taken production of the game lightly, and this is why it has won countless awards in the gaming industry, and why it is one of the best defense games around today.

This is literally a game that has been described as ground breaking, because of its difference to other games in the genre, as well as this, critics also loved this game, and gave it astounding reviews. IGN, GameRankings, and Gamespot cannot all be wrong.
